How long should aquarium lights be on? One of the most common causes of algae in freshwater aquariums is leaving the tank light on too long. More light does NOT mean healthier plants — and in many cases, it fuels algae growth. This 75 gallon aquarium had been sitting untouched for years, filled with old substrate, decaying plants, and deteriorated décor. The equipment no longer worked, the glass was coated in residue, and the entire setup needed a complete rebuild.
