Fish Momma's Fish Spotlight: Electric Blue Acara

If I had to recommend one cichlid to someone looking for a fish that's beautiful, full of personality, and doesn't have a major attitude problem, the Electric Blue Acara would be right at the top of my list.
I've actually got two of these blue beauties in my own fish room, and I absolutely love them. They're one of those fish that always seem to know when you're standing in front of the tank... especially if they think food might be involved. (Of course: they always think food is involved.)
Their electric blue color is absolutely stunning, and under the right lighting they almost glow. Pictures really don't do them justice!
So... What Is an Electric Blue Acara?
The Electric Blue Acara (Andinoacara pulcher) is a South American cichlid that's become incredibly popular over the last several years.
Now before you hear the word cichlid and start picturing a tank full of tiny underwater bullies... don't!
These guys have earned a reputation for being one of the friendliest and most peaceful cichlids you can keep. Sure, every fish has its own personality, but compared to many cichlids, they're basically the nice neighbor who just wants everyone to get along.
How Big Do They Get?
Adult Size: 6–8 inches
Lifespan: 8–10 years (sometimes longer!)
Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons
Could you squeeze one into something smaller? Maybe.
Would I recommend it? Nope. Give them room to swim and explore, you'll enjoy them so much more.
Their Dream Home
If Electric Blue Acaras were designing their own aquarium, I'm pretty sure they'd ask for:
🪵 Driftwood
🪨 Smooth rocks
🌿 Some plants
🏊 Plenty of open swimming space
🏡 A few hiding spots
Basically... think natural, not cluttered.
Mine spend part of the day exploring every inch of the tank, then suddenly decide it's nap time and disappear behind a piece of driftwood.
Good Tank Mates
One of the reasons I recommend these fish so often is because they're surprisingly easy to build a community around.
Some great tank mates include:
Silver Dollars
Blood Parrot Cichlids
Rainbow Cichlids
Firemouth Cichlids (in larger aquariums)
Corydoras
Raphael Catfish
Larger tetras
Plecos
Of course, fish don't read the same care guides we do, so always keep an eye on new introductions. Every aquarium is different!
What's for Dinner?
Thankfully, these fish aren't picky eaters.
Mine happily eat:
Quality cichlid pellets
Frozen mysis shrimp
Frozen bloodworms
Brine shrimp
The occasional tasty treat
And if they could convince me to feed them six times a day, I'm pretty sure they would.
Why I Love Them
Out of all the fish in my fish room, my Electric Blue Acaras are always among the first to greet me.
They're curious.They're interactive.They're beautiful. They somehow manage to have the confidence of a big cichlid without acting like they own the entire aquarium.
That's a combination that's surprisingly hard to find.

Temperature: 75–82°F
pH: 6.5–7.8
Moderate hardness
Clean, stable water
Honestly, good maintenance is far more important than chasing the "perfect" numbers.

If you've always wanted a cichlid but were worried about aggression, the Electric Blue Acara is one of the first fish I'd recommend looking into.
They're colorful, personable, fun to watch, and just plain enjoyable to keep.
