7 Ways to Keep Your Fish Safe During the Busy Holiday Season

1. Keep Little Hands Off the Glass

Fish and sudden tapping do not mix. Loud knocks or constant tapping can cause stress that weakens their immune system. If kids or guests are visiting, gently remind them to admire the fish, and not tap on the glass.

Quick tip: Add a cute sign that says “Please don’t tap, the fish are shy!”

2. Watch Out for Overfeeding by Well-Meaning Guests

Someone always thinks your fish look “hungry.” Unfortunately, extra food quickly turns into ammonia, cloudy water, and stressed-out fish.

Best approach: Let guests know only you feed the fish, or simply hide the food.

3. Keep Scents, Candles, and Sprays Away From the Tank

Holiday scents are everywhere, but aerosols, cleaning sprays, air fresheners, and even strong candles near the tank can contaminate the water.

Rule of thumb: Anything that floats in the air can end up in the aquarium.

4. Holiday Decor Can Cause Trouble

Tinsel, artificial snow, glitter, pine needles, and ornament debris can easily land in open tanks.

If your aquarium has an open top, consider placing a temporary cover during holiday decorating or parties. Better safe than sorry!

5. If You’re Traveling, Plan a Feeding Schedule

Fish do not need daily feeding, in fact, most species are healthier eating less than you think. If you’ll be away from home:

  • Use a vacation feeder block (only if appropriate for your species)

  • Or ask someone to feed tiny pre-measured portions

  • Or hire a local fish sitter

(And yes — Fish Momma does vacation feeding checks! 🐠)

6. Be Ready for Winter Power Outages

Cold snaps happen fast, and a heater without power means dropping temperatures that stress or harm your fish.

Get prepared:

  • A backup battery air pump

  • Insulating blankets to wrap around the tank

  • A plan for keeping the room warm

Even a few degrees can make a big difference.

7. Do a Pre-Holiday Tank Refresh

A clean tank stays stable longer, handles extra activity better, and looks beautiful for holiday guests and family photos.

Consider:

  • A 25–40 percent water change

  • Cleaning algae

  • Rinsing filter media (in tank water, never tap)

  • Vacuuming debris

  • Trimming plants

Your fish will feel calmer and your tank will sparkle.
