Let’s talk about one of the most misrepresented fish in the hobby…

The pleco.

A lot of people are told:“Oh just get a pleco, it’ll clean your tank.”

And while they do eat algae… that’s not the full story.

🐠 What Plecos Actually Do

  • Eat algae (yes)

  • Produce a LOT of waste

  • Grow much larger than most people expect

Some common plecos can get over a foot long (YEP!) 😳

🏡 Tank Tips

  • Not all plecos are the same (some stay small, like bristlenose plecos)

  • Need driftwood and hiding spots

  • Still require regular tank maintenance (they are NOT a cleanup crew)

⚠️ Fish Momma Tip

A pleco will not “fix” a dirty tank.

If anything, adding one to an already struggling tank can make things worse because of the extra bioload.

❤️ The Bottom Line

Plecos are awesome fish but they’re not a solution.

A clean tank comes from good habits, not just adding another fish.

If you’ve ever been told to “just get a pleco”… now you know 😅🐠
